Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop

Saturday,
Feb 7,
10 am to 2 pm
Near Troy Community Gardens, on Madison's Northside
Winter is the best time for pruning fruit trees, so bundle up for this hands-on workshop at Troy Garden’s organic apple orchard!
Kevin Bradley, who has run the organic Edible Forest Nursery in Watertown for over a decade, and Peter Kaseman-Wold, certified arborist and owner of Goodland Tree Works, will teach. They’ll alternate outdoor hands-on pruning practice with indoor instruction and warm-up breaks. Kevin and Peter will teach both the modified leader and open center pruning methods, share handouts, show a video and guide you in pruning the organic apple trees on site. We will have some tools available, but please bring bypass loppers and pruners, pruning saws, and stepladders if you have them.
Meet at Troy Community Gardens (502 Troy Dr. near Warner Park) at 10 am promptly, or, if you are late, use the map on the back of this flyer to find us at the nearby Mendota Mental Health orchard.
This
workshop is sponsored by Friends of Troy Gardens, a model for
sustainable urban living, and DOERS, a local group dedicated to
giving people hands-on opportunities to help refugees and the earth
and is part of an effort to establish more community orchards in
Madison. We would like to train a group of Troy Gardeners and
Northside residents to tend the orchard at Troy. We also hope to
train people from other parts of the city to start their own
projects. Attendees will be welcome to participate in other
activities throughout the season - including harvesting from these
excellent and productive apple trees in September!
Bring your lunch, we will provide hot drinks. Suggested donation: $15.00
(free for low-income CAC and Troy community gardeners). Contact Dan
